Kagekiyo knives (景清)
Kagekiyo knives are forged in Sakai, Japan’s most renowned city for traditional blade-making. Sakai is where Japan’s finest blades are born — with over 600 years of smithing history. It’s not just a city. It’s a legacy.
The Craft of Kagekiyo
Kagekiyo knives are made by Baba Hamono, a third-generation blacksmithing house based in Sakai. Led today by Shuzou Baba, their philosophy is simple: honor tradition, and push it forward. With microscope-level steel analysis and hand-forging side by side, they craft knives that are both timeless and cutting-edge.
Hand-Forged by Master Artisans
Every Kagekiyo knife is forged and finished by certified Dentō Kōgeishi — Japan’s traditional master craftsmen. Their hands shape every edge to near perfection, their experience carves every profile with intent. Handles are finished in layers of traditional urushi lacquer — applied patiently by masters like Juntetsu Momose. The result: smooth, water-resistant grips made to last.
Why Chefs Love Kagekiyo
Kagekiyo knives are considered among the best Japanese knives, combining master-level craftsmanship, exceptional sharpness, and elegant design, making them a top choice for both professional chefs and dedicated home cooks.
“I had a 240 kagekiyo in white, fit and finish was superb… Great performer and easy to sharpen.”
“All in all, they are my favourite knives in terms of performance and aesthetics. The fit and finish on them is the best of all the knives I own.”
